Justin Leroy Veazey, 90, of Madisonville, KY. formerly of Hanson, KY. passed away at 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday July 14, 2010 at Regional Medical center in Madisonville.

He was born June 30, 1920 in the Shakerag community of Hopkins County, KY. to the late Lula Jane Cavanah Veazey and Alvis Lee Veazey. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II. He was a former agent with Life and Casualty Insurance Company and was also a former rural letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service.

Leroy was a member and deacon emeritus of First Baptist Church in Madisonville. He was a charter member and former member of the Board of the Historical Society of Hopkins County, an early member and officer of Hopkins County Chapter 3391 AARP, for which he wrote a monthly column, "Lines by Leroy", for more than seventeen years. As a lifelong Democrat, he served for many years as an election officer at Hanson. To many friends and neighbors he was affectionately known as the Mayor of Shakerag.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Rupert Veazey and Durwood Veazey; two sisters, Erline Hughes and Emmagene Veazey.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eleanor Depue Veazey; two sons, David Leroy (Nancy) Veazey of Ocala, FL. and Carl Michael (Beckye)Veazey of Hanson, KY.; four grandchildren, Kristen Marie(Jarrod) Gavagni of Sebring, FL., William David Veazey of Ocala, FL., Emily Nicole Veazey of Hanson, KY. and Justin Michael Veazey of Madisonville; one great- grandson, Justin Wyatt Gavagni of Sebring FL., as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins, including special friend and nephew Dwight Veazey of Madisonville.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday July 17, 2010 at First Baptist Church in Madisonville with Dr. Joe Leonard officiating. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery in Hanson, KY.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Harris Funeral Home in Madisonville and from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour Saturday at First Baptist Church.

Active pallbearers will be, William Veazey, Justin Veazey, Scott Veazey, Lee Veazey, Robert Adkins and Kenneth Jones.
Honorary pallbearers will be, Kristen Veazey, Emily Veazey, Lee Ann Street, Eddie Ballard, Paul Shaffer, Amzia Wheeler, Joe Clark, James Parish, Donald Raymer, Monroe Slaton, Jim McMurtrie, Doug Creasey, Joe Nichols, C.L. Moman, F.W. Livingston, Mahlon Parker, Ann Veazey Davis, and Wayne Davis.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, Madisonville, Historical Society of Hopkins County, and Hopkins County Chapter 3391, AARP. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
